I help organisations and individuals build influence with the public, politicians and businesses.

I’m a strategic communications and campaigns consultant. I work on a range of projects from 30,000-feet strategy to sleeves-rolled-up delivery. I do this to keep my strategy work grounded in reality, and my delivery work sharp and strategic. I’m a qualified and practising coach.

I bring credibility, rigour, warmth and 15 years experience of running purpose-led communications campaigns. I’ve worked in-house, at agencies, and as an independent consultant helping teams adopt a campaigning approach to achieve their goals.

My work has won awards for policy influencing and media relations, and I’ve been named as a top PR professional by PR Week. As Communications and Campaign Director at digital campaign platform 38 Degrees and Head of Media at Shelter, I’ve worked across a wide range of UK and EU public policy issues.

Most, but not all, of my work concentrates on climate and sustainability. I have a solid understanding of the pathways to decarbonisation, public attitudes to climate change and net zero, sustainable finance, and the UK political landscape around net zero.

I work directly with climate scientists to support them to communicate their work, and I’ve completed the Sustainable Finance course at the Oxford University Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment.

What I offer

  • I help businesses and non-profits to create communications, campaign and impact strategies, then develop teams to execute them.

I’m skilled at working across teams, from the most senior to the most junior people. I work closely with CEOs, SLTs and funders, and run collaborative strategy processes that give everyone involved a chance to do their best thinking.

I bring structure, creativity, and kind challenge to help groups narrow their focus and test the strength of their ideas.

    • Leading communications strategy for net-zero data business Icebreaker One. Work with CEO on positioning, reputation and stakeholder engagement and designed engagement around COP26

    • Five years on the SLT of 38 Degrees, developing and delivering organisational strategy in a highly volatile political context. Managing change and growth while maintaining a nimble, entrepreneurial culture

    • Setting and delivering a successful strategy to grow 38 Degrees income by 20%

    • In-depth leadership training including Rockwood’s Art of Leadership and MobLab Campaign Accelerator

  • I design sessions that get the best out of teams. Sometimes that’s about taking an early stage idea and develop the bones of a strategy. Sometimes it’s helping teams design new ways to work together to implement a strategy. Sometimes it’s helping groups be ambitious, creative and impact-focused with their plans.

Meetings and workshops that I design feel focused, outcome-driven, creative and low-drama (with no cringe icebreakers).

  • My writing has appeared in the FT, Guardian, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, Times (and Teen Vogue) and gone to COP and Davos. I write op-eds, briefings, and reports to help organisations build a clear story to tell to their audiences - political, public or business.

I take a strategic approach, targeting a crisp goal and specific audience with speed and adaptability.

I’ve got an exceptional ability to work with complex technical or political topics: working directly with experts, understanding what will cut through to the audience, and translating it into high-quality messaging and copy.

    • Five years experience writing, editing and approving emails sent to 38 Degrees’ email list of two million people - building campaigns that changed government policy, raised millions of pounds, and moved hundreds of thousands of people to take action.

    • A career spent working directly with technical experts to create stories that meet the audience where they are - from housebuilding, to data infrastructure, to carbon credits, to the welfare system

Who I’ve worked with

What I’m like to work with

  • Highly strategic, with a strong eye for top-notch execution and the willingness to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in where it’s needed

  • Use intellectual rigour and emotional intelligence to bring clarity and decisiveness to complex issues

  • Experienced in (and love) fast-moving environments. I help teams to come to clear and ambitious decisions quickly

  • Take a rigorous approach to bringing the outside in. I help teams understand what their audience is thinking, develop messages and initiatives, and support them to create high-quality, confident execution

  • Bring lightness and creativity to high-pressure moments

  • Take a coaching approach, guiding people and teams to unlock their skills and see new perspectives

  • Sceptical of the ‘consultant as guru’ mindset. Instead I aim to build power and confidence in teams that lasts long after I’ve stopped working with them

  • I work best with people who value clear strategy, ambition, courage, honesty, humility and minimal ego.

  • “I sought out coaching in order to address a very specific goal, and chose to work with Laura because she offered me a more holistic and thoughtful approach. She was very quickly able to tap into my strengths and help me capitalise on them in creative ways.

“Not only did I reach my goal but I developed a confidence and ease through working with her. Her valuable insights helped me to reframe what I wanted to achieve in unexpected ways. She was skilfully able to pinpoint things I could not.

“Laura’s sessions are well structured with tangible goals. And at the same time they are enjoyable, personable and allow for true discovery. Working with her was an incredibly valuable experience”

    BBC correspondent, 2020

  • “I value Laura’s input greatly. She brings the needs of our audience to the fore, takes on board a range of complex issues and turns them into something relatable, and helps us think and act more strategically.”

Gavin Starks, Founder and CEO, Icebreaker One

  • “I was a bit sceptical going into the retreat as I wasn't sure whether we would be able to make any real progress.

“However, by the end I was completely converted and felt really happy about what we had achieved and what the future could bring. It felt like everyone had a chance to express themselves and contribute to the end result, which is a difficult thing to achieve. I think the event successfully strengthened the bonds between us and made everyone feel like that had a stake in our future.

“I think hiring Laura as an external facilitator was so important. She walked us through the process so well and it really helped to flatten any internal hierarchies so that everyone's voice could be heard.”

    Strategy retreat participant, 2023

  • “Laura has been a saving grace through the hurdles of launching my brand. Through her monthly mentorship she has shown me not just how to be more focused, but after every session comes a sense of clarity and relief from the overwhelm of the overall picture. She helps me reach a clear step by step approach of what I need to do next. She’s helped me build the ability to trust my own process, recognise my achievements, and understand my limitations in order for that to work in my advantage. Laura is patient, kind, and clever with her mentorship and I feel very lucky to have her support”

    Venture accelerator client, 2022

  • “Laura is a phenomenal writing mentor. Her attention to detail and empathetic approach helped me develop my writing skills. We built a writing regime tailored for me that I continue to use on a daily basis in my work“

    Coaching client, 2022

  • “Laura helped us think through our strategic approach to campaigning in the middle of lockdown - helping maximise our coronavirus response. She facilitated strategy meetings with the President and CEO, helping us look at the bigger picture and be more impactful.”
